Plant Stocking Coordinator
General Description:
Organize team to tag, price, set out and groom plants for attractive display.
Team meets each Thursday from 10:00 to noon.
Duties:
- Coordinate with Liz Rozycki, Horticulturalist on staff, to determine if she expects a plant delivery and/or if there are certain plants from propagation to put out.
- Know who will be available for work each week. If there is not adequate coverage for the nursery especially during holiday periods, inform Liz Rozycki.
- Check propagation each week to see if there is anything to bring out. Considerations are anything that is flowering or budding, nice foliage plants, and houseplants that are located by the quail pens. Succulent propagators typically keep the main succulent table and echeveria stone side table filled, and the 4-tier wood display stand with succulent wreaths and cups.
- Each week it is customary to: a) redistribute plants to fill holes making sure sun and shade plants are in proper areas, b) groom plants, c) make sure that all plants have a price tag and description tag, d) set out plants from propagation or a delivery, e) water plants (DO NOT WATER ECHEVERIA TABLE OR SUCCULENT WREATH DISPLAY). Bring your own pruners each week!
- Let Liz Rozycki know if you need price tags printed or anything else for purchase. Also let her know if anything is broken.
- When you work in plant stocking, you work directly with prospective buyers. People ask all sorts of questions: what plants are pet safe, will this plant grow in shade, will this plant grow in Tucson, where can I eat nearby. We have lots of horticultural texts in the shed and behind the desk in the gift shop. You can also call Liz on the walkie-talkie to ask a question. It is important to recognize that visitors to the gardens expect us to be as knowledgeable as anyone they may encounter at a for-profit nursery. Often the plant stocking team consists of very knowledgeable individuals who have stocked plants for years or may have a horticultural certification.
Specific Skills:
