Gift Shop Associate
General Description:
The Gift Shop is a revenue-generating retail operation. Sales proceeds directly support San Diego Botanic Garden’s programs and operations. The Shop associates are all volunteers, with a staff manager. The Gift Shop includes the adjacent Plant Shop and also functions as the Garden’s Visitor Center.
The Gift Shop Associate is responsible for interacting with, and serving as, an ambassador to all Garden visitors who visit the Shop, processing retail transactions and maintaining the appearance of the Gift Shop and Plant Shop.
Duties:
- Open/close the Shop as scheduled.
- Greet visitors and respond to questions.
- Operate cash registers, manage financial transactions, balance cash drawers and deposit sales proceeds.
- Act as a Garden ambassador – e.g. provide first aid supplies, provide directions, assist in emergency situations, etc.
- Maintain an orderly and clean appearance throughout the Shop.
- Introduce membership opportunities to visitors as appropriate and process applications.
- Answer the telephone and assist the caller or direct the call appropriately.
Specific Skills
- Familiar with basic Point of Sale transactions
- Knowledge of Gift/Plant Shop and SDBG retail policies
- Knowledge of Garden emergency procedures
- Ability to positively interact and constructively work with diverse volunteers, staff members and visitors
Time Required:
3 hours, 1-2 times per month
Recommended Term:
Two years, more if desired
