Garden Beautification Team Captain

General Description:

The Garden Beautification Team Captain partners with the Garden Beautification Coordinator and San Diego Botanic Garden staff to lead and organize volunteer efforts in the gardening tasks related to their respective areas of the Garden.

Duties:

  1. Train and orient new garden beautification volunteers and educate them on safety issues.
  2. Identify and train a co-captain, if possible.
  3. Closely coordinate activities with SDBG staff to ensure volunteers understand that the SDBG staff is in charge of volunteer efforts.
  4. Instruct volunteers that in the absence of the Captain, volunteers should solicit guidance from SDBG staff members.
  5. Maintain a list of regular volunteers and communicate with them on an ongoing basis.
  6. Manage activities of unexpected volunteers by putting them to work in your respective area or assign them to another area in need of help.
  7. Ensure the good condition, appearance and accurate signage in respective areas prior to all major events, e.g. Gala in the Garden, Garden of Lights, etc.
  8. Ensure volunteers follow appropriate guidelines regarding safety, nametags, use of tools, signing in/out, etc.
  9. Encourage dialogue with SDBG visitors.

Specific Skills

  1. Basic knowledge of gardening and horticulture
  2. Ability to productively work with others
  3. Organization and planning skills
  4. Ability to supervise and oversee volunteers

Time Required:

       7 to 10 hours monthly.

Recommended Term:

Minimum of two years
